Karima Labara, Algerian artist exhibition “The mask and the vortex”. Exhibition organized by Giuseppe Ussani d ‘Escobar and to be held from Wednesday, October 2, 2019, at the Galleria delle Biblioteca Angelica.

On the occasion of the exhibition, the artist presents to the public about thirty pictorial works, including three installations chosen with care by the curator in order to tell her work, to spread his message in one of the biggest places of Italian culture, guardian of the most important works of paper of the ancient and contemporary world. The artist of Algerian origin, residing in Venice, translates on canvas and through her installations her belonging to the marvelous Venetian city to which she feels indissolubly linked and on which one can undoubtedly find the origin of her artistic reflections. The mask, the colors with which it is compared, are among the elements that immediately betray its proximity to the culture of the city. Karima appropriates symbologies and uses them as a means to draw the viewer’s attention to the dualism of being. His mask is stripped of his carnival essence and becomes a supernatural and sacred means of worship. The works are born of a desire, of an urgent need for reflection and comparison, both with the space that surrounds it and with all the elements of nature.

Through these reflections, the artist proposes to the public an installation containing the characteristics of the two-faced Janus who, through the features and symbolism of tradition, is able to tell and report directly on the news. Thus, on the one hand, the Android being is visible, with a strongly symbolic and supernatural identity, which feeds on plastic and on the other side, appears the intoxicated flower contaminated by the lethal product. The work of the artist naturally joins the product of “social sculpture”, Joseph Beuys loving to define his installations having a political and human value, believing in an indispensable regeneration of society; but at the same time, it could be defined as “ecological sculpture” because it carries with it this vocation and this provocation.

Karima uses the typical Venetian mask, loading it with symbolic values, then reinterpreting it, assigning it a social and moral role, or rather “engaged”; in this sense, his artistic expression is cited in American Funk Art and especially in Edward Kienholz, who used American folklore, as well as models, to suggest and highlight aspects of the decadence of life style in the United States .

The drama of light, colors, shadows and forms is the synthesis of his pictorial language, is told in the paintings of Laraba, through abstract forms of rediscovered landscapes and loads of the force of the elements. His colors are measured, the brush strokes are a succession of gentle flows and determined to mean his ability to fully immerse herself in the language of nature as a vortex pushes her to know and deepen more and more his investigation .
